5th Grade Finishes The Giver

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Aubrie.  I’ve included some pictures from our online Padlet discussion about robots the day after our Witte field trip.  I also included a picture of the students using “Plickers” to respond to some questions about the field trip.  Remember that you can click on any picture to see a larger image.

Today in G.T. we (quite unfortunately) had no Genius Hour. Instead, we were tortured by G.T. testing. We have to take a total of 6 tests, and we have 2 left (I think). (Note from Mrs. Eichholz – They did not take 6 tests this Thursday – only one test that was 30 minutes long 😉

We finished ‘‘The Giver’’, and it left us hanging (Darn). Mrs. Eichholz saved the day by telling us that there were books in sort of a trilogy called ? Gathering Blue and The Messenger. Get it – Giver/Messenger? There’s also The Giver as a movie coming out this August that we *might* be able to see as an optional summer field-trip!!

We also discussed the field-trip we took Wednesday to the Witte Museum, and talked about robots for a while. The news crew was also at the Witte Museum when we were, and some of us got to be on the news!!

Lastly, five of us got a chance to pick a prize out of the treasure box.

See you next week!

Witte Museum, Part 2

Here are some of the pictures taken by the students on our field trip this week to the Witte Museum. (You can click on each picture to see a larger version.)

Witte Field Trip, Part 1

Today’s blog post is by Mahli.  I have not had a chance to go through all of the pictures the students took during our field trip, yet, so I will try to post them in the next couple of days.  The students were all very well-behaved, and seemed to really enjoy their time at the Witte.  If you try not to blink, you can even catch a few of our students in the KSAT news video below! (Thanks, Mrs. Borden, for passing that on!)

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Aubrie:

Today in G.T. we did testing for 30 minutes. That was not fun.

On happier notes, we did Genius Hour, and everyone is finishing up their projects (yay!). Hopefully, we should all get to create one more project before the year is over (gasp!). A message for the 5th graders – WORK HARDER!

We watched a new Kid President video as well, (attached below for your convenience).

We read ‘The Giver’, and are unfortunately nearing the end.

Last of all, Mrs. Eichholz explained Doodle4Google, a cool event where you draw a picture with the word ‘Google’ in it, according to the theme. The theme is… (dramatic pause)  ‘An invention that would make the world a better place’. Get sketching!

 Come back next week!

P.S. – Here is the Kid President website 🙂

5th Grade Continues with Genius Hour

Today’s blog post was written by Aubrie:

Today in G.T. we did Genius Hour, and a bunch of us will probably present within the next 2 or 3 G.T. days! Everyone has been completing a lot, and Anna is already finishing her 2nd project!

We read ‘The Giver’, and discussed it, and we are already about 3/4 done with it!

Mrs. Eichholz explained the field trips coming up, and sent out the permission forms. ( Turn them in on Valentine’s Day! ) We get to go to the Witte Museum, and see their new exhibits about alien life on space, and modern robots! We also get to go to Rackspace, and see how the company works!

Lastly, (although it happened 2nd today at about 9:00 🙂 we watched a new Kid President video (located below for your personal enjoyment).

5th Grade Experiences Google Glass

Today’s blog post was written by Aubrie, and photographs were taken by Anna and Mr. Belford.

In G.T. today we had a 2 special guests. Mr. Madden, father of a 4th grade G.T. student, had purchased a device called ‘Google Glass’. He explained to us what it was, how it worked, and answered all our questions about it. He even let us try it on, and we got to look up something, or watch a video, on it! Our other guest, Mr. Belford, was here to learn about Aurasma. Aurasma is a cool app that lets you scan a certain picture, and then a short video pops up!

We also worked on Genius Hour, and did the cruel challenges. Next time we do Genius Hour, a few of us might be ready to present! Anna was the first to present hers, and she did a scavenger hunt about Faberge’s eggs.

We discussed Google Glass and ‘The Giver’, and watched a Kid President video as well.

The class pets are on hold right now, but we hope we get more soon!

5th Grade Accepts the Challenge!

Today’s blog post was written by Aubrie.

Today in G.T. we had a half-day, because of the visitors at our school. We did Genius Hour, and 2 people were brave enough to do level 5 challenge cards!

We read ‘The Giver’, and discussed why the residents in the book were not allowed to have certain things.

Lastly, we did B.O.S.S. H.Q., where we did Little Bits, improved the B.O.S.S. H.Q. sign, and did 3Doodler, and worked on Valentine’s Day sudoku.

See you next week!

5th Grade Has our 1st Genius Hour Presentation of the Year

Today’s blog post is by Aubrie.

Today in G.T. we spent a lot of time on Genius Hour. We did the (extremely) evil challenges as well.

We also read ‘The Giver’, and discussed the chapters we read.

Lastly, we did Maker’s Studio, now called ‘B.O.S.S. HQ.’, which stands for Building of Super Structures. Only people who were on level 3 (we rank ourselves based on the number of Class Dojo points we have), (which means that you have 21 points and up),could do it. In B.O.S.S. HQ., we got to paint the sign reading:B.O.S.S. HQ., use mini electronic ‘robots’ called Little Bits, and use the newly-acquired 3Doodler pen, which can melt plastic and make 3-dimensional pictures!

See you next week!

5th Grade Works on Goals and Genius Hour

This blog post was written by Aubrie.

Today we focused mainly on Genius Hour, and we got a lot accomplished. Today we had less time than usual, because Mrs. Eichholz had a doctor’s appointment and had to leave at noon. As we did Genius Hour, we also graded ourselves on how we think we did on every subject.

We also did level 17 in algebra, and did a matching worksheet.

Lastly, we made goals for the winter season and watched a new Kid President movie.

Lainey has returned to Hidden Forest, and we would like to welcome her back to G.T.!

5th Grade Continues to Tackle Genius Hour Challenges

Today’s blog post is brought to you by Aubrie:

Today in G.T. we focused mainly on Genius Hour. Some of us were even daring enough to try an evil level 3 challenge card, such as: Interview a person outside of G.T., or put a timeline in your final project.

Our main goals for Genius Hour were:

Alex and Kenneth: Create a Lego stop-motion movie

Harrison and Cooper: Learn more about fish and other creatures

Kris and Conner: Create a plane that can fly 25 feet in 10 seconds

Paige: Learn more about albino animals

Alexia: Learn why dogs are important to humans

Anna: Find out about Faberge’s Eggs

Aubrie: Learn about Grover Cleveland

We watched a Kid President video called ‘Your 20 things we should say more often.”

We also read ‘The Giver’, and discussed the community.

Lastly, we beta-tested the game ‘Word’, where two teams try to describe a picture in one word, and place the letters in front of the screen.

Editor’s Note:  We also have some pictures of Aubrie (above) standing at our Genius Bar.  She brought some foreign coins to share with the class.
