3rd Grade Performs an “-ectomy”

The 3rd graders practiced what they have learned about the brain by playing a game called “-ectomy.”  If they answered a question about the brain correctly, they could add a lobe to their brain mats.  However, some of the cards informed them they needed to remove a part of the brain (like a cerebellum-ectomy).  The first person to get all parts of the brain won.  (I’ll let your students tell you who that was!)

They also talked more about growth mindset and metacognition, and continued reading Fish in a Tree – which has so many connections to what we have been discussing in class!

3rd Grade Welcomes a New Student

Welcome to Maya, who just moved here from out-of-state!  Maya participated in GT in her previous school, where they talked about many of the things we have been discussing this year so far.  She fits right in to our class like a puzzle piece!  Maya even recommended a book that she is reading for the class, and we all decided to read it together (Fish in a Tree).

This week, we discussed more about growth mindset, including the value of learning from mistakes.  The students also got some more details about how different parts of the brain work and made “Brain Hats!”

3rd Grade Talks About the Brain

Here are some things we learned about in 3rd grade GT today:

We learned every time you learn something new, your brain gets “bigger.”

Your brain can grow the most during the first 10 years of your life.

Mistakes help your brain to learn.

We did a “By the Numbers” activity to learn more about each other.

The Brain Bicycle video taught us that if you’ve been doing something for a long time and you are really used to it, it’s harder for you to learn to do the opposite of it.
