1st Grade: Fun and Games

It is said that Hopscotch was originally used as a military exercise for soldiers in the Roman Empire.  Children started to create a smaller courts to imitate the soldiers.  As kids will do, they added a scoring element and it became a game.  In first grade, the kids made an important discovery…some of the games they play today have been around for hundreds of years. Gasp! They were shocked to know that I had played the game when I was their age. 🙂  In talking about Hopscotch the kids thought it was interesting that the Roman children adapted a military exercise to create a new game.  I then challenged the first graders to create their own version of Hopscotch.  They are designing a hopscotch court, creating rules to their version, and sharing the big idea behind their game.  I had hoped the kids could test each other’s games out this week, but the weather did not work in our favor, so next week.

We also did some research on the history of the Olympics.  The first graders will create an event or modify a current event for the Olympics next week.
