The second graders took a closer look at crystals this week. Last week we finished the story, Two Bad Ants, and they used their six hat thinking to decide what the ants were thinking as they stood on the edge of the bowl of crystals. The students made inferences from the story to determine whether they believed the ants fell into a bowl of sugar or salt. They discussed the characteristics of both–shiny and white. Yet unless they tried them, they had no idea which was which substance. So this week they used jeweler’s loupes and looked closely at the substances and drew what they saw under the loupe. They again made predictions based on their observations. This is what we discovered as we looked under the microscope:
Do you notice differences? Which picture do you think is sugar? Which picture do you think is salt? Comment below and we’ll tell you the answer next week after the students study the connection between crystals and structures.
