7th period ACL Non Fiction Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Hello Class,

This month, I am currently reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand for my non-fiction blog for Project 20.  From what i have read, the main character, Louie Zampernini is quite the trouble maker. He is always wanting to fight and to steal but, he is a boy that does not give up. Later in the book, his older brother Pete trys to get Louie involved in a sport and later Louie begins to run for their school track. Louie puts all of his effort into running and later competes in track in the 1836 Olympic Games in Berlin. Although he didn’t do all great in the Games, he still tried his hardest but at the end of the Games, Louie could sense something terrible coming. Later in the book, Louie is beginning to prepare for the 1940 Olympic Games but they are soon cancelled due to Germany beginning to take over nations. This results in Louie being sent into the air corps to serve as a bombardier around 1941.

Something that really intrests me about this topic is that it has to do with track. I really like to run and I used to run for track in my old school, so this book caught my attention, especially to see that the 1940 Olympic Games were cancelled due to a war that was coming up. I also really liked that Louie transformed from being a young boy that always wanted to steal, fight and run away, to a boy that finds a passion for running and becomes successful in it. Some parts in this book also really reminded me of myself because my sister was a track runner too, so she was the one to train me just like Pete trained Louie. I also was really intrested because it mixes a sport with a war and it shows how everything can change in a second. One minute you’re an Olympic runner and the next you have become a bombardier for a war.

Sincerely,

Paola P

What happened in Louie’s life that changed him as a person? Did he easily give up his dream of being in the Olympics?

      Hi Allyson!
Sadly, I can’t answer your question because I haven’t gotten that far into the book. Sorry!
