7th Period ACL Inferring/Predicting Prompt: The October Country by Ray Bradbury

   Hello class,
I have been reading The October Country, by Ray Bradbury. This book is filled with short horror, thriller, and nail biting stories. One of them, in particular, really entertained me. “The Jar”, this story is about a man who buys one of those carnival jars filled with all kinds of icky, gooey, and disgusting junk. Charlie, the man who buys the jar, finds the strange object amusing and beautiful. When he takes it home, his wife immediately starts judging him about the clear container filled with who knows what. Although many others find the jar amusing, similar to Charlie. As a matter of fact, the jar causes so much publicity and becomes the talk of the town. People from all over the town come to Charlie’s house to see and talk about the jar. They all debate and argue about what the strange things in the jar could be. It drives them crazy and MAD!!! It’s funny how one plain jar filled with junk can make people lose their insanity and humanity.

As I was reading the short story, Charlie (the protagonist), really drove me insane. All he did was sit, watch, and listen to the people around his living room (the people talked about the jar). He sat there, always keeping to himself, sometimes he just smiled. I just wanted to get inside his head and see what was going on in his brain. When he did say something, it was to convince his wife that the jar is something more than just a “jar”. He was so obsessed with his beliefs. This led me to predict that somewhere down the line he had to make some interesting move. Something that would show us that he is still part of the story. Maybe something good… or bad. I guess we’ll have to see.
