7th period ACL Inferring/Predicting: Night by Elie Wiesel

Hi class,

This month I am reading, Night, an autobiography by Elie Wiesel, a survivor of the Holocaust. Before 1944, 15-year-old Eliezer’s life was perfect. He had his family, house, health, and food. However, after the Nazis enter Eliezer’s town of Sighet and deported him to Auschwitz, his life changes and he starts to lose hope. I couldn’t stop reading this book, because the book was so vivid and detailed about life in the concentration camps. On the one hand, it was really fascinating to me, but on the other hand, I learned that the event like the Holocaust should never happen again.

I read up to a part in which Jews are being forced on a long march in the snow to another concentration camp. Eliezer sees a son abandon his father, which Eliezer understands because life is difficult and survival is important. Maybe this means that Eliezer has had thoughts of leaving his father himself. However, Eliezer hopes that he never abandons his own father. I predict that Eliezer will abandon his father. I think this, because there are some anecdotes about other sons beating their fathers for scraps of bread to survive in the concentration camps. This allows me to assume that Eliezer will also betray his father, because Eliezer also very much wanted to survive.

Thanks for reading,

Kyoungmin S
