6th period ACL characters- The Giver by: Lois Lowry

Hello class,

The book I’ve started reading this week is The Giver by Lois Lowry. It’s basically about a boy named Jonas who lives in a “perfect society”. In the society everyone does as their told, no questions asked. Everyone is chosen for a specific job at the age of twelve and everyone will each be assigned a place to stay. Some will be chosen to give birth or take care of children, and some will be assigned in the medical department. Jonas is different. He was chosen for a very special job, The Giver. He is trained by an old man that knows what everything is like when people had choices, when people felt emotions. Jonas struggles with these strange feelings and is put to the test when he has to save the ones he loves.

A character that really changed the story was Jonas because he discovers things most people in their society didn’t even know exist. He was once just as clueless as the next guy until The Giver showed him emotion and feelings. He starts to see color and experience everything that comes with being human, both good and bad. He sees war and love, happiness and loss. It makes him determined to help change the society.

Thanks for reading,

Kayla T
