3rd Period ACL Languages: Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman

Hello class,

I’m currently reading Son of the Mob by Gordon Korman. Vince, after some pushing from his best friend Alex, has gotten a girlfriend. But there’s only one problem. Vince’s dad is the head of the Mafia, while Kendra’s, Vince’s girlfriend, dad is the leader of the FBI mission set out to get rid of the Mafia. Vince starts jumping through hoops to make sure that Kendra doesn’t find out who his dad is.

I liked the way that the author described the audience throwing food at him while he was singing with Kendra at the nightclub.

Highly selective abusers, this crowd. (Page 116)

Instead of just saying “they were throwing food at me”, the word choice helps the reader picture tons of food just being hurtled at him. It helps add a comedic feeling to the scene, too. It sounds like the people were debating on what person they should throw things at instead of just throwing food at him because he was bad at singing.

Sincerely,

Kaitlyn S.
