7th Period ACL Open-Ended Prompts: Scarlet

Hello Class,
Today I am reading Scarlet by Marissa Meyer. This is the second book in The Lunar Chronicles, a great series that is a mix of fairy tales, science fiction, and a hint of fantasy. The first book, Cinder, is a story about Cinderella as a cyborg in New Beijing, trying to save the world from the plague and the terrible Lunars. Cinder comes back in the second book, Scarlet, along with Scarlet, Little Red Riding Hood. Scarlet is trying to save her grandmother, who has been kidnapped, when she discovers Wolf, a street fighter who may know her grandmother’s location.

As I read the book I felt enveloped in the ideas because they were so unique and new. I had never read a book before that was even close to this series. I recommend this book (though you should read Cinder first) to every science fiction and fairy tale loving fan there is.

Thanks for reading,
Adalie C

Hi Adalie! What a great post! The Lunar Chronicles is one of my favorite series. I agree – it is so unique! I haven’t finished reading them all but you have encouraged me to keep going. Are you going to read the third book now? What else do you like to read?

Yes, I have finished reading Cress and Fairest. I am currently reading the Royal Diaries series. This is a very interesting series that takes you into the life of princesses and the politics of the past. I have just finished Marie Antionette and Anastasia’s “diaries”. They truly show you how it is like to be in the past’s royal families and deal with all of their problems.

Hi Adalie – I loved Cinder and I’m so glad you have been reading this series. This is such a unique story – are there other books that you would recommend for fans of this series? Do you think it appeals to both boys and girls? Why?

I would recommend Singer in the Snow to all of the Lunar Chronicles fans. This story is one of many written on Nevya, the ice planet. This relates to the Lunar Chronicles and not other science fiction books is that there is no controlling government.
This series is appealing to both girls and boys because there is not only romance but action, and advanced technology.

In the second book, is scarlet fighting alongside Cinder or are they both two different stories? Also are the stories like the original classic stories with a twist or are they completely different?

In the second book it is both Cinder and Scarlet’s stories that combine by the end. The stories are very similar to the original Cinderella and little Red Riding Hood but have a distinct twist with modern technology. Otherwise we would completely know the entire plot!
