Bottoms Up!

US kids don’t drink enough water!

One of the most often heard complaints in the nurse’s office is headache. Did you know headaches can be a sign of dehydration? Even mild dehydration can have negative effects on the body and many times the signs and symptoms can go unrecognized.

Signs of mild to moderate dehydration:

  • Thirst
  • Dry or sticky mouth
  • Not urinating much
  • Darker yellow urine
  • Dry, cool skin
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps

When a child comes to me with a headache and does not have a fever I always encourage them to drink more water. Many times they have not had anything from their water bottle and it is already after noon. Fruit infused water can be a great solution for those children who are resistant to drinking plain water.  Just add your favorite fruit(s) to water and enjoy!

One of the best things we can do for children is to teach them a love of water. Adults in their lives who model drinking and enjoying water will influence them in a positive direction. Natalie and I always have water bottles on our desks and we talk to the children a lot about how important water is for a healthy body.
