How Does Speed and Performance Relate to Being Good at Math?

1

Posted by abrigh | Posted in Math, Parents, Problem Solving | Posted on 08/19/2013

Think of a time when you witnessed someone do math quickly in their head? Did you automatically think they were good at math? You probably answered, yes. Americans are pretty convinced that if you are fast at math and don’t make mistakes then you are “good” at math. Where did we get this crazy idea?! Why do we equate mistakes in math tasks to an innate inability to learn math? (as if we are born with a certain amount of math aptitude)

Do you think children feel this way about math? What if we told them that it’s okay to make mistakes when doing math because that’s how you learn? What if we told them to think deeply about mathematics because that’s what real-life mathematicians do?

So. How does speed and performance relate to being good at math? It doesn’t. The speed at which you can do math relates to your math fluency, not how “good” you are at math. And performance in a school environment is simply feedback for a student as they are learning math and becoming more proficient.

Math. Messages. Matter.

What are your thoughts about the messages we give kids regarding math and math ability?

Toothpaste Teamwork!

Mrs. Bright gave us a challenge to get as much toothpaste out of a tube as possible. It was hard and we made a mess; but it was fun and we did a good job! Mrs. Bright surprised us when she said, “Now try to get as much toothpaste back in the tube as possible.” That was even harder!

When we were done Mrs. Bright asked us, “How are your words like the toothpaste in the tube?” It didn’t take us long to figure it out. When you say mean or ugly things it’s very difficult to get them back. The damage is done. We talked about self-discipline with our words and actions, and we talked about saying sorry. This was a fun way to learn a lesson!

Did your class do any fun virtue lessons this year? Tell us about them!

How is a Puzzle Piece Like a Student?

How is a puzzle piece like a student?

And how is a puzzle like a class?

In our activity, each student decorated a puzzle piece to represent themselves. Then they went about the work of putting the puzzle together as a team. This was not an easy task because they didn’t know what the puzzle would look like when it was finished. We had a great discussion after the puzzle was put together! See if you can figure it out. How is a puzzle piece like a student? And how is a puzzle like a class?
